Signal Transduction

Signal transduction refers to any process by which a cell converts one kind of signal or stimulus into another.
Most processes of signal transduction involve ordered sequences of biochemical reactions inside the cell, which are carried out by enzymes, activated by second messengers, resulting in a signal transduction pathway. The number of proteins and other molecules participating in the events involving signal transduction increases as the process emanates from the initial stimulus, resulting in a "signal cascade," beginning with a relatively small stimulus that elicits a large response. This is referred to as amplification of the signal.

Signal transduction at the cellular level refers to the movement of signals from outside the cell to inside. The movement of signals can be simple, like that associated with receptor molecules of the acetylcholine class: receptors that constitute channels which, upon ligand interaction, allow signals to be passed in the form of small ion movement, either into or out of the cell.
Signal-Transduction Pathways
A cell is highly responsive to specific chemicals in its environment. Hormones are chemical signals that tell a cell to respond to a change in conditions. Molecules in food or aromas communicate taste and smell through their interaction with specialized sensory cells.
The Signal Transduction Lab
The Signal Transduction Laboratory (STL) is involved in defining the molecular mechanisms of the G protein mediated signal transduction pathways. The Laboratory focuses on the two different aspects of G-protein signaling: The first one focuses on defining the molecular components involved in G-protein signaling while the second one focuses on utilizing such knowledge to develop a diagnostic biosensor.

Conversation in the biological world is quite natural. Even on the level of the cell, a busy broadcast of communications is occurring; a fact which has caught the attention of biologists. Today, one of the hottest areas in cell biology research is the study of ’signal transduction’.

Upstream Signal Transduction of NF-kB Activation
NF-kB is a transcription factor governing the expression of genes involved in the immune response, embryo or cell lineage development, cell apoptosis, cell cycle progression, inflammation, and oncogenesis. During past few years, tremendous attention has been focused on the upstream signaling pathways leading to the activation of this transcription factor. Many of these signaling molecules can serve as potential pharmaceutical targets for the specific inhibition of NF-kB activation and the subsequent interference of disease processes.
